Crespel & Deiters repositions as plant-based refinement specialist amid group restructure

Ibbenbüren-based ingredients group Crespel & Deiters has announced a significant corporate restructure, consolidating its business divisions under a single brand and broadening  its raw material portfolio beyond wheat to include pea and fava bean. The sixth-generation family business, founded in 1858, has reframed its identity from wheat specialist to what it describes as a refinement expert for plant-based raw materials. The change follows a management reorganisation at executive level and is accompanied by a new strapline — “Nature. Refined. Since 1858” — along with a refreshed logo and website.

Processing technologies at the core

The group’s technical offering centres on a range of processing methodologies including fractionation, extrusion, blending, protein hydrolysis and starch modification. These are applied across two primary sectors: food ingredients and paper processing. The company employs approximately 450 people across sites in Ibbenbüren, Helmond and Zwingenberg, with sales offices in Europe, the USA and Mexico.

At its Ibbenbüren headquarters, wheat starch and wheat proteins are processed into functional food ingredients and high-performance adhesives for the paper industry. The Helmond facility specialises in food extrusion, operating four production lines alongside a laboratory extruder for innovation scale-up. Zwingenberg functions as a technical centre focused on food application development and R&D.

Brand consolidation

As part of the restructure, the former Loryma food ingredients brand has been absorbed into the Crespel & Deiters masterbrand, though established product lines such as the Lory® range retain their names. Similarly, the Definol® adhesives range and the Corrugating & Paper division continue under their existing designations. Philipp Deiters, executive management member and CSO for the Food Division, commented: “Our heritage obligates us, while our technology enables our future. Refinement also reflects our attitude – that is, to make something better with every solution for the customer, the market and a more sustainable industry.”

Positioning for growth

The repositioning signals an intent to serve a wider set of industrial applications by combining plant-based raw material expertise with application-specific formulation knowledge. The company positions itself as a development partner for what it terms “performance-oriented and sustainable solutions.”

Deiters added: “Knowing that quality and sustainability are gaining in importance across all industrial sectors, we anticipate strong growth. The sixth generation of our family business is well positioned and ready to write the next chapter of the Crespel & Deiters story.”
