SIG achieves APR recognition for recyclable bag-in-box beverage packaging
SIG has developed a new recyclable bag-in-box package featuring their Terra RecShield D laminate, which has received formal recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR). The innovation centres on a nylon compatibiliser technology that enables the entire package, including closure and evacuation components, to be reprocessed into blown film whilst maintaining package durability.
The package consists of two film layers plus polyethylene closure and evacuation components. The outer layer utilises SIG’s Terra RecShield D laminate, a three-layer biaxially-oriented nylon structure incorporating a novel compatibiliser. This additive reduces nylon domain size within the polyethylene matrix, enabling successful reprocessing without compromising structural integrity.
Independent validation was conducted by Plastics Forming Enterprises (PFE), who tested the complete package assembly including the SIG Terra Versi Connect 2750 fitment. The testing confirmed the package’s ability to be reprocessed into blown film while meeting APR’s Design Guide criteria for plastics recyclability.
When combined with SIG’s DipStrip technology, the package achieves over 99.8% product evacuation, addressing both packaging and product waste concerns. Dr Teresa Bernal-Lara, Global Head of Film Development at SIG, explains: “The breakthrough of this innovation is that circular recyclability can be achieved without compromising package robustness throughout conversion, filling, and distribution.”
Commercial implications
The development is particularly significant for the post-mix beverage concentrate sector, where the package is the first of its kind to receive APR recognition. “As companies strive for net zero, recyclability is a key lever in their sustainability journeys,” notes Brent Haynam, Director of Commercial Engineering and Sustainability at SIG. “In North America, we’ve seen the focus here shift beyond retail and into the foodservice arena.”
The innovation forms part of SIG’s Terra portfolio, which focuses on sustainable packaging solutions. The company reports that the package design prioritises efficient resource utilisation while maintaining the structural requirements necessary for beverage concentrate distribution. The recycling-ready package is now commercially available, offering food and beverage manufacturers a validated solution for sustainable packaging that aligns with circular economy principles.
