SPX FLOW, a global leader in process solutions, has been awarded the “Sustainable Product Award” at the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards for its groundbreaking Aseptic Rapid Recovery System (ARRS).

This patented pigging technology represents a major advancement in sustainability and food safety for aseptic dairy and beverage processing operations.

The ARRS employs a tight-fitting rubber projectile that travels through process piping to recover residual product typically lost during cleaning cycles. By recapturing this product waste, the system reduces product losses from 4% down to an impressive 0.5% – an 87% improvement in yield recovery.

“We are honoured to receive this award recognizing the ARRS’s sustainability benefits,” said Pranav Shah, SPX FLOW’s Global Market Director for Dairy and Plant-Based Beverages. “This aseptic pigging technology represents a major departure from traditional practices, significantly minimizing waste, water usage, and cleaning downtimes.”

Conventional cleaning-in-place (CIP) methods are inefficient, leaving behind substantial product residues that must be flushed out with large volumes of water and chemicals. The ARRS virtually eliminates this waste by mechanically scouring piping interiors to reclaim valuable product before CIP operations.

87% product recovery rate

In addition to its 87% product recovery rate, the ARRS slashes water consumption for cleaning ambient product lines by 60-70% compared to standard CIP protocols. Reduced cleaning times further enhance the system’s sustainable footprint.

From a food safety perspective, the ARRS’s aseptic design prevents any potential post-processing contamination of sensitive products like dairy beverages. This safeguards consumer health while extending shelf-life.

“SPX FLOW’s ARRS exemplifies sustainable impact through major reductions in product waste, water usage and cleaning times,” commented Matt Harney of SEAL Awards. “These tangible benefits were key factors in awarding this innovative system our Sustainable Product Award.”

The ARRS positions SPX FLOW at the forefront of sustainable, hygienic processing solutions for the dairy, food and beverage industries. The company plans to provide more details on its environmental initiatives in an upcoming sustainability report.
