Angel Yeast scales microbial protein facility to tackle alternative protein demand
/ in E-News, Industry News, Protein

The completion of Angel Yeast’s main production plant at Baiyang Yichang marks a significant milestone in the company’s sustainable protein development strategy. The facility, scheduled to begin operations this year, represents one of the largest dedicated yeast protein production sites globally, demonstrating the technical feasibility of large-scale microbial protein manufacturing.

The new facility, with potential to produce 11,000 tonnes of yeast-derived protein annually, addresses growing concerns about conventional protein production methods and their environmental impact, while promising enhanced protein quality compared to traditional plant-based alternatives.

The production process demonstrates marked environmental advantages over traditional protein sources, with carbon dioxide emissions approximately 95% lower than those associated with animal protein production. The manufacturing process also substantially reduces water and land resource requirements compared to conventional protein production methods.

The company’s AngeoPro yeast protein product exhibits several technical advantages over existing plant-based proteins. According to Zhang Yan, assistant general manager of Angel Yeast and dean of the Angel Yeast Research Institute, “AngeoPro has redefined ‘future protein’, boasting 80 percent higher protein content and a 96 percent protein utilization rate that surpasses nearly all plant-based proteins.”

The protein profile includes all nine essential amino acids, comprising 47% of total amino acids present. This compares favourably with whey protein at 46% and typical plant proteins at 35-40% essential amino acids, positioning yeast protein as a nutritionally complete protein source.

Market dynamics suggest expanding opportunities

The timing of this production expansion aligns with projected protein demand growth, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in Singapore, Good Food Institute’s founder and CEO Bruce Friedrich noted that the region is expected to account for 50% of global meat demand by 2050.

Commercial applications advance

The company has already begun market integration of AngeoPro, with applications ranging from protein supplements to alternative meat products. Current product implementations include protein bars, high-protein cereals, protein powder formulations, and plant-based meat alternatives. The ingredient has recently been incorporated into a vegan protein bar brand in India, demonstrating market feasibility.

Rapid production

The rapid production cycle – measuring in hours rather than the months or years required for traditional protein sources – suggests potential for responsive scaling to meet market demands. This efficiency, combined with decreasing production costs, positions yeast protein as a technically viable protein alternative for food manufacturing applications.

The facility’s completion represents a significant step in scaling microbial protein production, though long-term market adoption and consumer acceptance remain to be demonstrated.

Angel Yeast continues to investment in research and development, particularly focusing on production technology optimisation and application expansion.
