Beneo launches low-glycaemic syrup for premium pet food applications

Functional ingredients manufacturer Beneo has introduced BeneoCarb S, a low-glycaemic syrup derived from sugar beet, specifically developed for semi-moist and moist pet food applications. The ingredient offers manufacturers an alternative to conventional glucose syrups and caramel colorants whilst delivering specific nutritional benefits.

Technical properties and processing advantages

The syrup contains high levels of naturally occurring isomaltulose and trehalulose disaccharides, compounds typically found in honey. These carbohydrates feature stronger glycosidic bonds compared to sucrose or cooked starches, resulting in reduced glycaemic and insulinemic responses. Recent scientific studies have demonstrated that isomaltulose, a primary component of BeneoCarb S, produces lower blood glucose elevation in dogs post-consumption.

From a processing perspective, BeneoCarb S exhibits low viscosity characteristics, making it suitable for various pet food manufacturing processes. The ingredient undergoes Maillard reactions during retorting, producing brown coloration in gravies and jellies. This property is particularly significant as caramel additives face an impending ban in pet food formulations by July 2025, according to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1173.

Functionality in finished products

When used in pet food applications, BeneoCarb S demonstrates multiple functional properties:
• Provides sweetness comparable to glucose syrup with DE value of 60
• Acts as a binding agent in baked pet treats
• Exhibits antioxidative properties
• Reduces water activity, enhancing product stability
• Limits microbial growth, offering a natural alternative to glycerine and propylene glycol

Manufacturing and sustainability considerations

The ingredient is manufactured at Beneo’s Offstein, Germany facility as a co-product during the production of Palatinose (isomaltulose) for human nutrition. This manufacturing approach aligns with circular economy principles by maximising raw material utilisation. The ingredient is listed in the EU Catalogue of Feed Materials as ‘isomaltulose molasses’ under Commission Regulation (EU) No 68/2013.

Market relevance

Research conducted by FMCG Gurus in August 2023, surveying 2,500 pet owners across five countries, indicates strong market potential for products incorporating functional ingredients. Dr Maygane Ronsmans, Product Manager Animal Nutrition at Beneo, notes: “Interestingly, despite inflation, and rising costs of pet food, pet owners don’t want to compromise on ingredient quality, nutritional value, taste and health claims.”

Regulatory status

BeneoCarb S has achieved regulatory acceptance for pet food applications in the European Union, where it is officially categorised as a feed material under the designation ‘isomaltulose molasses’.
