Innovia launches specialised film for ice cream flow wrap packaging
In a move set to revolutionise ice cream packaging, Innovia Films has announced the launch of a new white ultra-low density film specifically engineered for ice cream flow wrap applications. The film, designated VL40, promises to deliver enhanced performance for high-speed packaging operations whilst maintaining product quality.
The VL40 film is a white cavitated biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film with a remarkably low sealing threshold. This innovation comes as a response to the demanding requirements of the ice cream industry, where packaging materials must withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and provide excellent barrier properties.
Alasdair McEwen, head of the European Packaging Division at Innovia, emphasised the significance of this development: “Nothing screams summer more than ice cream and we are proud to be able to offer our new VL40 white cavitated film that is an excellent partner for one of our favourite summer treats. A typical way to package ice cream is to use high-speed flow wrap packaging that preserves the quality of the product until consumption.”
Technical specifications
The new film grade boasts several key features that make it particularly suitable for ice cream packaging:
- High-gloss white coextruded OPP structure
- Wide heat seal range
- High puncture resistance
- Superior printability
These characteristics address critical concerns in ice cream packaging, such as maintaining product integrity, preventing food waste, and enhancing visual appeal on store shelves.
Manufacturing process
The development and production of VL40 took place at Innovia Films’ site in Płock, Poland. Piotr Piasny, General Manager at the Płock facility, provided insight into the manufacturing process: “We made some significant changes to our extrusion lines to be able to deliver this specific film grade that is ideal for ice cream sandwiches and popsicles. The team did a great job in a very short time”.
Performance in varying conditions
A crucial aspect of any packaging material for frozen foods is its ability to withstand temperature fluctuations. The VL40 films are largely unaffected by climatic conditions, but storage temperatures should not exceed 40°C (104°F).
Under suitable storage conditions, the film maintains its properties for up to six months, ensuring a reasonable shelf life for packaging materials – an important consideration for ice cream manufacturers managing their supply chain.
The introduction of VL40 could have significant implications for the ice cream industry. As manufacturers continually seek ways to improve packaging efficiency and product preservation, specialised films like VL40 may become increasingly important.
