Ohly expands enzyme production nutrient range with new X-SEED products
Ohly has announced an expansion of its X-SEED® portfolio with new bionutrients specifically designed to enhance enzyme production efficiency. The development comes as industrial enzyme manufacturers seek to optimise their production processes whilst maintaining cost-effectiveness.
The company has introduced three new products: X-SEED KAT Advanced, X-SEED KAT Plus, and X-SEED Carbo Peptone. These yeast-based nutrients serve as primary or secondary nitrogen sources, with the specific aim of maximising enzyme titres and increasing specific activity. Additionally, the formulations have been designed to facilitate downstream processing, addressing a key consideration in industrial enzyme production.
Research and development process
The new additions to the X-SEED range are the culmination of a three-year collaborative effort with key customers in the enzyme production sector. The development process involved extensive laboratory investigations before advancing to pilot-scale trials, with multiple prototype iterations refined through customer testing.
Abhishek Somani, Bionutrients Business Development Manager at Ohly, explained the development process: “During development, our fermentation specialists worked alongside biochemists, process engineers, formulation specialists and microbiologists to conduct lab scale investigations before progressing to pilot stage. After a series of customer trials with multiple prototypes, we have successfully refined and tailored the nutrients to reliably optimise product yields, process productivity and overall outputs for each production host’s specific requirements.”
Technical specifications and applications
The X-SEED range leverages Ohly’s expertise in fermentation and extraction technology, providing balanced complex nutrients that include amino acids, peptides, vitamins, minerals, growth factors and nucleotides. These components have been specifically formulated to meet the nutrient requirements of various microorganisms used in industrial enzyme production.
The new products complement Ohly’s existing portfolio of yeast derivatives and culinary powders, which are supplied globally to the food, biotechnology, human, and animal health markets. The company’s expertise extends to products marketed under various brands, including OHLY®, PROVESTA®, and OHLY-GO®.
Future developments
Following the successful launch of these products, Ohly has indicated that additional concepts are in development. The company is actively identifying new product categories and potential strategic partnerships where their specialist expertise in fermentation and bionutrient development could provide additional value.
The expansion of the X-SEED range demonstrates Ohly’s continued commitment to supporting the biotechnology industry’s fermentation processes. As a member of the ABF Ingredients group, the company maintains its focus on developing high-value ingredients for food, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
