Innovia unveils new in-mould film for large food containers
Innovia Films has introduced a novel semi-cavitated film designed for in-mould labelling of large format containers, offering potential benefits for food packaging manufacturers.
Enhanced stiffness for larger labels
In August 2024, Innovia Films launched RayoForm™ ELR70, a new in-mould labelling (IML) film solution targeted at large format containers. This five-layer, semi-cavitated film features a matt side and a gloss side, with a lower density compared to standard white films.
The film’s high stiffness allows for the production of larger labels and sheets, making it suitable for containers ranging from 5 to 25 litres. This characteristic could prove particularly useful for bulk food packaging applications.
Dual-sided treatment for optimal performance
Paul Watters, Product Manager Labels at Innovia Films, explained the film’s capabilities: “The high stiffness of the film allows for bigger labels and larger sheet conversion, this product performs excellently on both PP and PE containers.”
The film’s two-side treatment enables control of anti-static levels, facilitating high-speed sheet feeding and moulding processes. This feature aims to optimise both printing and moulding performance, potentially streamlining production for food packaging manufacturers.
Applications in food packaging
While the press release mentions applications in paint and industrial markets, the film’s suitability for large format containers suggests potential uses in bulk food packaging. The enhanced stiffness and performance on both polypropylene and polyethylene containers could offer food manufacturers new options for packaging and labelling larger quantities of products.
