Automated and flexibile packing technologies

Automated and flexibile packing technologies.
The VP 501 high speed case packer has been designed to efficiently pack shaped bottles made of PET and HDPE plastic. The machine can process up to 7 different bottle shapes in over 20 formations. The machine’s strengths lie in the dividing system designed specifically for shaped bottles and in the controlled guiding of the products from the infeed up to the packing into wrap-around cases. Format changes are fully automatic and with no parts to remove or replace, they are also fast and precise. The formats and settings can be saved and recalled later to ensure exact and reliable replication. The machine is designed to operate continuously over a long period of time and for this purpose has been equipped with a high capacity blank magazine.
The construction of the popular FTS-B-HD 32 bag closing machine has been optimised to simplify cleaning and maintenance. The machine closes multilayered paper bags and when these are lined with PE-inners, a hermetic seal results. The integrated cleaning station  means that packaging dusty materials poses no problem and the FTS-closure is ideal for the hygenic sealing of bags containing food products. Improved electrical and pneumatic systems, simplified cleaning and maintenance and an enhanced control system complete the upgrades.

Atmospheric pressure GC

Ever-tightening food regulatory demands lead to greater sensitivity requirements from commonly utilized analytical techniques such as GC-MS. Additionally, there is a need to reduce the injected volume of samples in order to minimize matrix effects and the contamination of instrumentation. Atmospheric pressure GC (APGC) is an ionization source for Waters’ mass spectrometers that provides access to ultra-trace quantification, comprehensive qualitative MS & MS/MS, and high-resolution, ion-mobility separations. Changeover from UPLC to GC is fast and easy. APGC allows food and beverage scientists to analyse both GC and LC compounds on a single MS platform.

Aseptic valves for beverage and dairy industries

EvoGuard
Krones has succeeded in designing aseptic valves that provide a combination of safety and affordability. The EvoGuard aseptic seat valves handle classical tasks like rerouting and shutting off product flows, or emptying tanks. EvoGuard aseptic double-seat valves are used for separating hostile media in aseptic and sterile processes. With double-seat valves, the routings in the production operation can be run under preprogrammed control. One salient feature of their construction is the fact that all cross-sectional areas have been responsively designed to match the nominal diameter involved, thus eliminating any restrictions on the flow rate. A modularized range of choices is available, from which individual components can be selected to suit the particular application concerned.

Aseptic filling machine

Filler
Filler
The Asep-Tec filler is designed to fill, under aseptic conditions, fruit juices and dairy products. For many of these products the shelf life is not only limited to microbiological activity but also to chemical deterioration such as oxidation. For these products the shelf life can be increased by reducing the oxygen level in the filled and sealed bottle. The total process of product storage, bottle and cap treatment, as well as controlling the internal conditions in the aseptic zone of the filler, require special attention in order to reduce the oxygen level in the filled and sealed bottle. Stork has designed several modules and systems for this purpose with their ‘Modified Atmospheric Filling system’ (MAF).

Aseptic dual filling system for PET bottles

Composed of PX and Fillstar FX
A new aseptic dual filling system, suitable for the bottling of both high acid and low acid still beverages containing pulps, fibres and pieces of fruit or cereals with dimensions up to 10x10x10 mm, is available from GEA Procomac. The uniqueness of the system is that the line is composed of two different fillers: the new aseptic piston doser PX for solid particles with set volume from 30 to 150 mL and the volumetric electronic filler Fillstar FX, an industry standard for aseptic beverages filling. After container treatment the filling is realised in two steps: once the solid particles are dosed the clear product is added. The dual fill system requires a two stream process line: one dedicated to the thermal treatment of the pieces and the other to the thermal treatment of the clear liquid. The system is suitable for bloc configuration with both wet and dry sterilisation systems.

Aseptic drives

Food manufacturers need to ensure that the cleanliness of their production lines is maintained to the highest standard to avoid contamination of product. Aseptic drives are carefully designed for applications where regular washdowns are required to maintain a clean environment. The motor is designed so that a fan and cooling ribs are not required, thereby allowing for a completely smooth outer casing with a non-drive end which is sealed. This eliminates any dirt traps on the motor casing and also prevents re-infection of the local environment caused by air movement from a cooling fan. The design also includes a very high level of ingress protection, up to IP69K, which is a special designation for washdown applications involving high pressure, high temperature water. In addition, the aseptic drive is painted using an acid and alkali resistant formula, which can withstand chemicals with a pH range of 2 – 12. As a result the new drive system can withstand the cleansing solutions and disinfectants that are commonly used within the food industry without affecting its performance. A combination of aseptic motor/gearbox packages has been developed with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to enable a very efficient package to be installed. The majority of the drives use 0.75kW motors, with some smaller 0.55kW units and most of these, nearly 80%, are coupled to the BK20 hollow shaft bevel gearboxes. When installing a large number of motors onto a production line, it is important to maintain high energy efficiency so that the return on investment can be minimized. All of the aseptic motors from Bauer are rated IE3 energy efficiency class and when combined with the VFD they can deliver optimum energy consumption and running costs. By designing a system with a large number of common components, the engineers were also able to minimize the spare parts inventory while still ensuring the most energy efficient and reliable design. In addition to this, the motor itself is equipped with thermistors and class F insulation, which makes it suitable for control by VFD and the thermistor connections are combined with the motor connections in a stainless steel, round connector which allows quick and simple motor connection while still maintaining the hygienic aspect of the design.

Aseptic blow moulding system

Blow moulding system
The ABF (Aseptic Blow Fill) system, a rotary aseptic blow moulding machine (Airstar) with an integrated aseptic filler and capper, decontaminates preforms with an H2O2 dry process, and maintains this sterility when blow moulding PET bottles and throughout the entire filling and capping process. Any possible risk of contamination during blow moulding and bottle transfers has been minimised; the whole process takes place within a sterile zone and all non-cleanable components are located outside the machine. This extremely flexible solution can blow and fill up to 48,000 bottles an hour and operate at different levels of decontamination: this allows products with different shelf lives – low-acid aseptic beverages, high-acid aseptic beverages, ESL beverages, etc. – to be produced on the same system. Using almost no chemicals or water, and minimal energy, the whole system is also more compact than traditional technology and requires fewer operators, allowing considerable operational and maintenance cost savings.

Aseptic bags

Four-ply aseptic bags
The new four-ply aseptic bag solves the issue of flex cracking, a very frequent problem causing de-lamination, de-metallisation and eventually breaking the bag. This happens frequently and can jeopardise product preservation, caused by the continuous movement of the bag content during handling and transport, which leads to erosion of the bag structure. The use of superior resin recipes and the addition of a fourth inner ply, has created an aseptic bag with an extremely flexible structure, which maintains the usual barrier and mechanical properties, but performs exceptionally well against flex cracking. The new 22OI bag is available in the standard and extra-high barrier (with aluminium foil) versions and it is particularly suitable for low-viscosity products such as citrus fruit concentrates, juices, apple juice, purees and diced tomato.
