ACI Group calls for stronger supplier oversight in nutrition supply chains

Supply chain and distribution specialist ACI Group is urging nutrition and functional food brands to adopt a more rigorous approach to supplier engagement and ingredient sourcing, as regulatory scrutiny and sustainability requirements continue to intensify across the industry.

Brands are now expected to demonstrate full traceability, ethical sourcing, and sustainable practices from raw materials through to finished products. According to ACI Group, strategic collaboration across the supply chain has become essential for safeguarding product integrity and maintaining consumer confidence.

Beyond documentation: the case for first-hand validation

ACI Group’s position is that businesses must move beyond paperwork and supplier assurances to embed transparency and first-hand validation at every stage of their supply chains.

“Brands today are expected to do more than rely on paperwork alone,” said Sam Lubbock-Smith, Business Development Manager at ACI Group. “First-hand engagement such as site visits enable companies to verify sourcing practices, quality systems, and innovation capabilities while building relationships that support long-term credibility and consumer trust.”

Viridian and Alvinesa: a case study in supply chain transparency

To demonstrate this approach in practice, ACI Group recently facilitated a two-day site visit to Spain, bringing together premium supplement brand Viridian and Spanish ingredient specialist Alvinesa.

The visit provided an end-to-end view of Alvinesa’s upcycled ingredient supply chain — from vineyard and winery partners through to manufacturing, laboratory testing, and new product development. Tracing grape and olive materials from farm to finished extract gave Viridian direct confidence in the integrity of the supply chain, whilst illustrating how upcycled agricultural by-products can be converted into high-value nutraceutical ingredients.

Technical rigour and collaborative innovation

The visit also highlighted the operational standards underpinning Alvinesa’s ingredient production. On-site laboratory testing and structured new product development processes were identified as key factors in assuring ingredient purity, safety, and consistency — qualities of particular importance to premium supplement brands.

Beyond operational insight, the visit created an opportunity to capture origin-level content from vineyards, wineries, and olive groves, which will support future educational and marketing initiatives around provenance and responsible sourcing.

“End-to-end transparency, sustainable sourcing, and structured supplier engagement are no longer optional,” added Lubbock-Smith. “Brands that prioritise oversight and collaboration at every stage of the supply chain strengthen credibility, safeguard quality, and position themselves to meet both regulatory expectations and consumer demand for sustainability.”
