The Netherlands-headquartered company, which produces the EXBERRY range of colours derived from non-GMO fruits, vegetables and plants, achieved an overall score of 86 out of 100 in the 2025 assessment. This result positions GNT in the 99th percentile of rated companies.
Key areas of improvement
The improved rating reflects progress across multiple sustainability criteria. GNT reported enhanced resource use and waste reduction through the implementation of more efficient systems and equipment to lower energy and utility consumption. The company also strengthened its ethics and compliance practices, incorporating external audits and independent verification processes.
Supply chain management formed another focus area, with GNT taking action to address potential sustainability-related challenges. The company expanded its supplier oversight programme with additional on-site visits to promote sustainable procurement practices throughout its network.
UN Global Compact commitment
In 2025, GNT officially committed to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), aligning its strategy and operations with internationally recognised principles covering human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and anti-corruption measures.
Rutger de Kort, Sustainability Manager at GNT Group, said: “This Platinum medal is the result of a continuous improvement journey and represents a significant milestone in GNT’s ambitious sustainability plans. We’ve worked tirelessly to drive higher standards, strengthen policies and procedures, expand sustainability KPI reporting, and improve our risk assessment practices.”
He added: “This achievement underlines our strong commitment to an ethical and environmentally friendly EXBERRY value chain. By actively identifying and addressing potential risks, our customers can rest assured that we have gone the extra mile to ensure they will receive safe, secure, and sustainable supplies long into the future.”
Customer benefits and future targets
The sustainability developments offer tangible benefits for GNT’s customers, including greater supply chain resilience, reduced carbon footprint and additional assurances regarding ethical sourcing practices.
GNT has outlined plans to lead the food colouring market on sustainability, with targets including significant reductions to carbon intensity at its manufacturing facilities and training all contract farmers in sustainable agriculture methods. The company’s closely managed supply chain approach enables it to provide accurate Product Environmental Footprint data for the majority of colours in the EXBERRY range.
Founded in 1978, GNT is a family-owned business headquartered in Mierlo, The Netherlands, with offices across Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. The EXBERRY portfolio serves applications including confectionery, dairy, bakery, beverages, cereals, snacks, sauces and plant-based alternatives.
