SIG reports 15% growth in sustainable packaging portfolio
SIG’s Terra portfolio of aluminium-free and other sustainable packaging materials has experienced double-digit growth in 2024, significantly outpacing the company’s overall revenue increase. The portfolio now accounts for 9.3% of SIG’s aseptic carton production in Europe and 4.1% globally, demonstrating increasing market adoption of more environmentally responsible food packaging solutions.
SIG has announced significant growth in its sustainable packaging portfolio, with sales of SIG Terra packaging materials for aseptic cartons increasing by 15% in 2024. This growth substantially outperforms the company’s already robust 6% overall revenue growth in carton packaging, indicating a strong and sustained market demand for packaging solutions with enhanced sustainability credentials. The company reports that approximately 1.7 billion litres of food were packaged using SIG Terra materials in 2024 alone. Since the portfolio’s introduction, SIG has produced enough packs with Terra solutions to contain around 6 billion litres of food.
Market expansion and geographical penetration
The growth has been particularly notable in Europe, where SIG Terra solutions now represent 9.3% of food packed in SIG aseptic cartons. Globally, the figure stands at 4.1%, with successful sales expansion of the SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier packaging material in China contributing to this overall growth.
Christoph Wegener, Chief Markets Officer at SIG, commented on this trend: “The success of our SIG Terra portfolio shows that the demand for even more sustainable packaging solutions is accelerating. At SIG, we are driven by a vision of a regenerative future, and we are proud to support our customers in making meaningful progress in their sustainability targets.”
Technical innovations in sustainable packaging
SIG has positioned itself as an industry pioneer with several notable innovations, including the launch of the world’s first aluminium-free aseptic carton in 2010. This was followed by a full-barrier version in 2022 designed for oxygen-sensitive products such as fruit juices, nectars, flavoured milk and plant-based beverages. In 2021, the company introduced the first recycle-ready bag-in-box solution for water.
The SIG Terra portfolio encompasses the company’s most sustainable packaging innovations, featuring aseptic carton packaging materials without aluminium layer and with polymers linked to forest-based and recycled materials through certified mass balance systems. The portfolio also includes recycle-ready bag-in-box and spouted pouch solutions.
Compatibility with existing infrastructure
A notable advantage of SIG’s approach is the compatibility of Terra packaging materials with existing filling infrastructure. The aluminium-free materials are designed to work with SIG filling lines already in the market, enabling food and beverage manufacturers to transition to more sustainable packaging without additional capital expenditure requirements.
According to independent ISO-compliant life-cycle assessments, SIG’s packaging solutions demonstrate significantly reduced lifecycle carbon footprints and environmental impacts compared to alternatives in relevant market segments. SIG produced 57 billion packs in 2024 and generated €3.3 billion in revenue. The company employs approximately 9,600 people worldwide and serves customers in over 100 countries from its headquarters in Neuhausen, Switzerland.
In terms of environmental and social governance credentials, SIG holds an AAA ESG rating from MSCI, a Platinum CSR rating from EcoVadis, and is included in the FTSE4Good Index.
