CarobWay launches CarobBiome prebiotic fibre at IFT FIRST 2025

Swiss food technology company CarobWay has introduced CarobBiome, a carob-derived prebiotic fibre designed to deliver gut and metabolic health benefits whilst minimising digestive discomfort. The ingredient was launched at IFT FIRST 2025 in Chicago in July.

The Basel-based start-up’s entry into the prebiotic market addresses growing consumer demand for natural solutions supporting microbiome health, weight management, and metabolic wellness, particularly as GLP-1 therapy usage continues to rise.

Unique fibre composition targets digestive comfort

CarobBiome comprises 85% fibres in a distinct blend of soluble and insoluble fractions. The insoluble fibres regulate bowel function and contribute to the ingredient’s low-bloating potential, whilst soluble fibres provide prebiotic benefits and microbiome-balancing effects, housing powerful antioxidants.

“Not all prebiotics are equal,” explains Udi Alroy, CEO and co-founder of CarobWay. “While many fibres on the market can cause some level of stomach discomfort, CarobBiome is specifically designed to ease bloating and maintain a happy tummy. Moreover, it is completely natural, vegan, and allows for a clean, simple ingredients label. It also is highly nutritious.”

The ingredient derives from the carob fruit and contains naturally occurring polyphenols that actively nourish gut microbiota. Current preclinical assessments are examining its positive prebiotic effects.

Growing market demand drives development

According to Innova Market Insights, fibre ranks as the second leading functional ingredient choice for consumers, following protein. US consumers demonstrate increasing interest in fibre, with perceived importance rising with age, whilst younger generations show particular interest in prebiotics.

The timing coincides with increased focus on GLP-1 therapies, where users require nutrient-dense foods rich in protein and fibre due to reduced food intake. Soluble fibre’s capacity to slow digestion contributes to satiety, supporting weight management goals.

“With increased focus on GLP-1, and digestive health topping consumer priorities, our prebiotic carob fibre offers a potent, natural solution for both trends,” claims Alroy. “As GLP-1 users and those dieting in general are eating less, they need to be sure they are getting more from every bite they consume.”

Technical properties enable versatile applications

CarobBiome demonstrates neutral flavour profiles without bitter notes and maintains heat stability. These characteristics enable integration across diverse applications including baked goods, confectionery, nutrition bars, snacks, meal replacements, and beverages targeting GLP-1-compatible diets.

The ingredient is 100% vegan, allergen-free, and non-GMO, meeting current clean-label requirements. Beneficial bacteria produced by the fibre generate short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which support gut health and metabolic function whilst potentially stimulating GLP-1 hormone release for appetite and blood sugar regulation.

Sustainable sourcing approach

CarobBiome utilises upcycled carob pulp in a zero-waste production approach. Carob cultivation requires minimal water input and virtually no chemical fertilisers or pesticides, thriving on non-arable, rocky terrain unsuitable for other crops.

The commercial launch of CarobBiome is scheduled for next quarter as the company scales operations and advances scientific validation.
