DolCas Biotech targets functional beverage sector with low-dose marine collagen
DolCas Biotech is positioning its Morikol marine collagen ingredient for incorporation into hot beverages including coffee, tea and cocoa, offering food scientists a heat-stable, water-soluble collagen hydrolysate that requires significantly lower dosing than conventional collagen products.
Ultra-low molecular weight peptide structure
The warm-water fish-derived ingredient delivers bioactive tripeptides in the GXY configuration, comprising glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These tripeptide units are absorbed intact through the intestinal transporter PEPT1. The company’s proprietary enzymatic hydrolysis process produces peptides with standardised molecular weights, followed by enzyme deactivation, filtration, purification and spray-drying to create a temperature-stable powder.

Clinical efficacy at reduced doses
A 12-week clinical trial demonstrated positive effects on skin elasticity and hydration at 1g daily dosing, whilst a separate study showed joint health benefits at 2g daily, with significant improvements observed within five weeks and reduction in joint swelling and cracking by 10 weeks. An animal study indicated protective effects against sun-induced skin ageing.
Commercial applications
The ingredient is currently featured in Cup of Joe’s Zend Wellness MetaGlow Collagen product, a marine collagen peptide complex containing Morikol alongside four other branded ingredients. The formulation targets skin appearance, joint health, weight management and stress reduction through single daily serving incorporation into beverages.
“While collagen is ubiquitous in the beauty-from-within market, it also has strong relevance to the sports nutrition space helping maintain joint health against sports induced stress,” says Rao. “It can be easily infused into post exercise shots and shakes. Our product is clean label. It contains no added enhancers. It is simply 100% pure all-natural collagen.”
