Wacker launches FGF-2 Food growth factor for cultivated meat production
Munich-based Wacker Chemie AG has introduced a bioengineered growth factor specifically designed for cultivated meat applications, with initial batches now available and deliveries commencing in Q4 2025.
Microbial production meets food safety standards
The product, termed Recombinant bovine FGF-basic Food (FGF-2 Food), is produced through microbial fermentation without animal-derived components and complies with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) quality standards. According to Mathias Wiedemann, head of Biosolutions at Wacker: “FGF-2 is an essential growth factor for cell cultivation in the production of cultivated meat. With our biotechnological solution, we offer a reliable and scalable alternative to existing products – making an important contribution to establishing sustainable protein sources.”
Role in cell culture media
In cell culture systems, FGF-2 Food promotes proliferation of muscle and connective tissue cells whilst preventing premature differentiation. This functionality enables the formulation of cell culture media without conventional animal-derived components such as foetal calf serum.
Addressing scalability challenges
The cultivated meat sector, which currently encompasses over 170 companies globally, has previously relied on growth factors available only in pharmaceutical grade and limited quantities. Wacker positions itself as the first manufacturer capable of supplying commercially viable volumes in food-grade quality, addressing a key obstacle to industrial scaling.
Market rollout strategy
Cultivated meat has received regulatory approval in the USA, Singapore and the UK, with approval processes underway in Europe and Asia. Wacker’s initial market focus will be the United States, with planned expansion to Asian and European markets in 2026.
The company has maintained a partnership with Aleph Farms since 2021, collaborating on production processes and supply chain development. Wacker’s Biosolutions division is developing a broader portfolio of growth factors, media proteins and peptides for the cultivated meat sector.
