IFF has announced the opening of its new Citrus Innovation Center, strategically located in Florida’s citrus belt at Florida Polytechnic University’s campus in Lakeland. The 30,000 square foot facility represents a significant investment in citrus research and development capabilities for the flavour and fragrance industry leader.

Advanced research capabilities

The centre houses state-of-the-art equipment for botanical research, leveraging IFF’s natural ingredients expertise through its LMR division. Comprehensive facilities include processing laboratories, analytical instruments, and product creation spaces for both scent and taste applications.

A notable feature is the 360-degree digital immersion room, enabling immersive product development experiences. The facility has been designed specifically to accelerate innovation across multiple application categories.

“Citrus is vital to our creations in scent and taste, with enormous potential for innovation across our businesses,” said Erik Fyrwald, IFF CEO. “The Citrus Innovation Center embodies our unwavering dedication to innovation, and our commitment to creating enduring external partnerships that help us to bring leading solutions to our customers while doing more good for people and planet.”

Industry applications focus

The centre will concentrate on developing applications for food and beverage, fine fragrance, body care, and fabric and home care products. According to IFF, the facility enables rapid product development, exploration of innovative citrus applications, and advanced product testing.

The development hub will support approximately 40 jobs initially, with room for expansion, including opportunities for job rotations, professional development and training.

Sustainability credentials

Sustainability features prominently in the centre’s design and operations. The facility has achieved LEED silver certification and incorporates a solar array system that meets the site’s entire power demand. Additional environmental measures include the use of well and reclaimed water for irrigation, energy-saving processes, and a comprehensive recycling programme partnered with Recycling Services of Florida.

Dr Devin Stephenson, president of Florida Polytechnic University, described the opening as “a pivotal milestone for Florida Poly, launching a bold partnership that will drive pioneering research and create transformative opportunities for our students and faculty.”
