Digital Science launches Papers AI research workspace for scientists
Digital Science has launched Papers AI, an AI-native workspace built to help researchers and students, including those in food science and engineering, write, manage data and run code within a single project. Built by the team behind Overleaf, the platform is designed to keep AI assistance aware of a project’s full context, so users do not have to re-explain their work each time they return to it.
One workspace for the whole project
Papers AI combines writing, data analysis, project management and collaboration tools that are normally spread across separate systems. The workspace supports Word, Markdown, Typst and LaTeX documents alongside Jupyter notebooks, CSV files and Kanban boards, allowing researchers handling experimental data, such as sensory panels or shelf-life datasets common in food science, to keep drafts and results in one place. Papers AI also lets users run Jupyter notebook cells and work with CSV files directly inside a project, with outputs reused as figures or tables in a manuscript rather than copied manually between programs.
The integrated AI assistant reads a project’s drafts, datasets and references together, removing the need to re-upload files or restate context. Digital Science says user data is never used to train models, and the platform can also run entirely offline, so no data leaves the researcher’s own hardware.
Reviewable edits keep researchers in control
Every AI-suggested change in Papers AI appears as a reviewable edit that can be accepted, rejected or adjusted before it becomes part of a document. Updates made in one file are reflected across related files, keeping a project synchronised with a record of what changed and why.
Amye Kenall, Chief Product Officer at Digital Science, said researchers “lose enormous amounts of time in the gaps between tools” and that Papers AI “never changes anything quietly”, since every edit is tracked and every file stays in sync.
Juan Castro, Principal AI Scientist at Digital Science, said most AI tools “only see the page in front of you”, whereas Papers AI’s assistant “sees the whole project”, including the draft, dataset and notebook, so it can help with the parts of research that take the most time.
For food science and engineering groups managing formulation data, sensory panels and shelf-life studies alongside written manuscripts, keeping code, data and text within one synchronised project may reduce administrative overhead across multidisciplinary studies.
Availability
Papers AI is available now at papers.ai, with free and paid tiers, and sign-up is handled directly within the app. Users can also connect an external or local AI model instead of, or alongside, the built-in assistant, giving research groups flexibility over which systems process their data.
Digital Science notes that the Papers name was previously used for part of ReadCube’s reference management tools, which are now grouped under the ReadCube brand and are unrelated to Papers AI.
